The benzodiazepine medication Ativan, known generically as lorazepam, is a prescription anti-anxiety drug most commonly recognized for its use in the short-term management of severe anxiety and panic symptoms. While it is typically quite effective at relieving anxiety, it has both therapeutic and adverse effects. Compared to other benozdiazepines, lorazepam leaves the bloodstream quickly, meaning it has a lower risk of toxicity but a higher risk of dependence, and is thought to be safer for patients with impaired liver function.
Common Side Effects of Ativan
The most common side effects of lorazepam use are drowsiness/sedation (the most common side effect, experience by nearly 16% of patients), dizziness, weakness, and unsteadiness. Other side effects may include headache, dry mouth, diarrhea, nausea, appetite changes, restlessness or excitement, constipation, difficulty urinating, frequent urination, blurred vision, and changes in sex drive of ability. Some side effects, such as sedation and unsteadiness, are more common with increased age.
Serious Side Effects of Ativan
The following side effects are potentially serious, and should be evaluated by your doctor: shuffling walk, persistent tremor or inability to sit still, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe skin rash, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin), and irregular heartbeat.
