Anxiety Medication Overview of Ludiomil

Ludiomil is the brand name of a tetracyclic antidepressant medication sometimes prescribed as a treatment for anxiety. Tetracyclic antidepressants have been around since the 1970s, and are closely related to the more commonly known tricyclic class of antidepressants. Ludiomil was first marketed in the early 1980s and is now widely available in its generic form, maprotiline.

Ludiomil is used for the treatment of depression, manic depression, and also for the treatment of anxiety (particularly anxiety associated with depression). It appears to work by strongly inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, displaying a much weaker inhibitory influence on serotonin, the other neurotransmitter most commonly targeted by antidepressants. Like most other antidepressants, it can take several weeks before taking Ludiomil begins to improve symptoms of anxiety.

The medication is available in 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg tablets. The usual starting dosage is 75 mg/day, often taken in three doses of 25 mg each. This dosage can then be gradually increased to an appropriate therapeutic amount, generally 75 to 150 mg per day. If necessary, a daily dose of up to 225 mg can be prescribed.

Ludiomil has not been well-studied in children and teenagers and is not recommended for use in individuals under 18 years of age. Common side effects include drowsiness, weakness/tiredness, excitement or anxiety, insomnia, nausea, nightmares, dry mouth, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and changes in appetite or weight.
